’’THE MESSENGER’'

’’THE MESSENGER’’ is the maquette for a new monumental bronze of John W. Smith for San Antonio, TX.  Smith was the last messenger sent by Lt. Col William B. Travis. in 1836. He rode out to get reinforcements for the Alamo.  The sculpture will be 12.5 feet in height and placed on the Alamo Sculpture Trail, which would include 14 bronze sculptures, placed between the Alamo and the Briscoe Western Art Museum and will be dedicated in 2018 during San Antonio Texas tricentennial celebration.  William Barret Travis, Commander of the Texian rebels in the former mission known as the Alamo, wrote a plea for help as they were surrounded by enemy forces under Mexican dictator Santa Anna.  Addressed to “The People of Texas and All Americans in the world” and signed “Victory or Death,” this letter is known as one of the most stirring documents in American history.

‘’ I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch - The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days.  If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country - Victory or Death.’’

On Memorial Day I think of my father who served in the military for 30 years thinking of you dad .

On Memorial Day I think of my father who served in the military for 30 years thinking of you dad .
Lt. Col. Herbert Navarro born in Dell Rio Texas February 11, 1926. Was one in a family of 13 children and grew up in San Antonio Texas. In 1941 when he was 15 years old he started working for Western Union as a bicycle delivery boy to help support his family. He told me his most difficult deliveries were military death notice telegrams to the families of soldiers fighting in World War II. In February 1944 he enlisted at the age of 18 in the U.S. Army. After boot camp he was given the assignment of being a POW guard for German prisoners relocated to Louisiana. At the end of World War II he went to college on the G.I. Bill as a ROTC cadet. He graduated in 1950 with a degree in physics and was sent to the Korean War as a second lieutenant in the US Army first Field artillery. After his tour in Korea he told me while he was in the Army he would see the planes flying above and thought he would rather be up in the sky than down here on the ground. He then proceeded to transfer into the Air Force in 1952. He was sent to flight navigation school and also received a bachelor degree in electrical engineering. In 1970 he did a tour in Vietnam developing night vision imagery systems on the gunship Puff the Magic Dragon. In 1972 our family was transferred to Torrejon Air Base Madrid, Spain. My father fluent in Spanish and now a Lt. Col. was put in charge of Combat Grande the installation of the defense radar for Spain. My father joined the Army as a Pfc. in 1944 and retired with 30 years of military service in 1974 at the age of 48. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a master navigator with continuous flight status and qualified on the B- 25, C-119, B-47, B-52 and the KC-135.

Art is more the product of a commitment made by ordinary people than it is the product of unique talent possessed by only a chosen few.

Over the next few days I will be sharing excerpts from my new book ‘’EMBRACE THE STRUGGLE’’ A hardbound 122-page Hardbound book priced at $25.
With my book ‘’EMBRACE THE STRUGGLE’’ I want to inspire people, with my artwork and story. Because embracing the struggle defines who you are.
From the very beginning, I had to find the path on my own, but I have never considered myself a self-taught artist; I am a self-educated artist. I have learned from the books I have read and the experiences and mistakes that I’ve made. I do not believe that we’re born with a limited amount of talent, knowledge, or ability. Talent and knowledge can expand and grow. I have never allowed my lack of talent or knowledge to stop me from doing what I believe to be meaningful.

We begin life with unlimited potential. Every child is an artist. If you want to see a group of artists, get a bunch of 4-year-old kids together, spread out some crayons and paper, and then sit back and watch them create. Children have no fears or preconceived concepts about art. They understand “fun,” so they enjoy art for the pure and simple pleasure of experiencing it. Unfortunately, many people lose their sense of play as they grow older. They worry too much about what others think and seek the approval of their peers to validate what they’re doing. As I have grown older, I realize the most important approval is my own.

Today is Mother’s Day and it is time to give props to my mother. I know I would not be the man I am today without her love and guidance.

Today is Mother’s Day and it is time to give props to my mother. I know I would not be the man I am today without her love and guidance. Mary Louise Brown, was born Nov. 12, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas. She had an extremely difficult childhood and was orphaned at the age of five following her mother’s death. She married young, and at age of 22, she brought me into this world as her fourth of five children. My mother has always been the backbone of our family. There were many times when my career military father was gone six months or more on deployment, and it was up to my mom to keep everything together she basically raised us alone. The thing I admire and love about my mom is that she always believed in the power of education. While raising five children, she went back to school to receive her bachelor, master’s, and doctorate degrees in English literature. In 1999, she retired as an English professor emeritus and head of the honor society at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. She showed me what you can do if you work hard and follow your dreams. I love you mom.

I loved how the mountains in the background repeated the mountain lines in the base of the sculpture and it was placed high up suspended in the air.

I just installed BOLT FROM THE BLUE at a collectors home and I believe it one of the most impressive locations and settings I have installed a work. I loved how the mountains in the background repeated the mountain lines in the base of the sculpture and it was placed high up suspended in the air.

Believe me, there are no overnight successes in the art world.

Believe me, there are no overnight successes in the art world. The notion of the right gallery or art agent “discovering” you and paving the way to your artistic success is a myth. Building your art career is a lifelong struggle. If you want to be great at something, you need to put time in the studio with the materials in your hands. It is accomplished through dedication, hard work, and a love for what you are doing. Because love is an emotion, you can't (and should not try to) fake success, and you cannot be great at anything without loving it. Caring about the work you do is the single best indicator that others will care about it, too. I know that what is in my heart is no different than what is in your heart. If you believe that other people are like yourself, then you hold the key to making art that matters.

‘’I know what it is like to have a dream and you are the only one who can see it.’’ Chris Navarro

March 13, 1986, was the day that I quit my corporate oilfield job. Walking away from a predictable income, I was finally pursuing my dream of being a professional sculptor. My son, JC, was ten months old, and Lynne was pregnant with Natalie. Everyone told me it was the wrong decision. After all, I had a mortgage and a family to support. But there are times in life when you must make a stand and turn your dreams into reality. I just knew it. I knew deep inside that I was doing what was best for my family. I believed my instincts. So, listening to my heart and trusting my gut, I took a leap of faith and have not once regretted the decision. If you want something bad enough, you have to be willing to take a chance and put in the effort to make it happen. I wanted to make a living doing something I loved and was passionate about. If you have a dream that is the driving force in your life and you have to give it up, you’ll feel lost and incomplete. I decided I was not going to spend my life just showing up for a steady pay stub at the end of the week.

My first bronze sculpture was going to be about something I had a knowledge of and passion for, and that was bull riding. After studying the library books, I began creating my first sculpture in wax. It should be noted that most of my learning came from the school of “I didn’t know any better, trial-and-error” method, an extremely slow process. I worked on weekends and nights, and it seemed to take forever. I had two weeks of paid vacation per year, so I took one week to devote all of my attention and time to getting it done. My buddies at work thought I was crazy to spend my vacation time alone, in my trailer house, working on a sculpture. But I had a burning desire to finish this piece. Somehow, I knew it would change my life. I finally completed the sculpture, which I titled Spinning and Winning, because bulls that spin usually score higher points than bulls that just jump and kick. The next step was to get it cast in bronze. I had heard about Caleco Foundry, a lost wax bronze-casting foundry in Cody, Wyoming. I drove to Cody and was informed that it would cost $1,000 to cast my first sculpture! I had no idea it was going to be that expensive, but I was committed and used my savings to get it done.
